So you go on YouTube and see these jacked-up dudes and dudettes repping out muscle ups at a park. Of course, you want to create and share such videos, but question pops in your mind: “Where is my nearest calisthenics park?”
That question is actually a very popular one, and a lot of people have it when they start out in calisthenics. Also, a lot of people have no idea how and where to find the best and nearest workout parks.
Thanks to the power of the internet in 2019, you don’t have to drive around for hours finding a park near you that has all the things you want in it (i.e., pull-up bars, parallel dip bars, maybe some ninja warrior stuff).
There are a few resources you can use that will help you find parks near you.
A simple Google search
This might sound and quite obvious, but have you ever actually searched “calisthenic parks near me” or even “workout parks near me” on Google? If not, you’ll be surprised by just how many are within a 10-15 minute drive.
This, of course, depends on your location, but you’ll be surprised how many are around your local area that you probably didn’t even know about.
Another search could even be “playgrounds near me” as most playgrounds have enough equipment to use for your workouts. Most have monkey bars, all have gravity. You might not be able to do some exercises like dips, but you can certainly still work on skills and get killer workouts.
And, if you buy yourself a pair of gymnastic rings or TRX, you can incorporate other exercises like dips, bodyweight rows, bodyweight biceps curls, triceps extensions, and more.
Calisthenics-Parks
Easily one of the best websites/apps there is to find a calisthenics park near you is Calisthenics-Park.
The site has near 10,000 parks on their platform worldwide, which means the chance of you finding a park near you is quite high.
Just putting in a city in the search bar will generate every calisthenics park within that city. Once you do the search, the results provide an address and a map so you can find your way there. Most parks have absolutely everything you need including pull-up bars of all heights, parallel dip bars, pushup bars, straight poles where you can practice dragon flags, etc.
Not only that, but you can also be an active member on the platform and add spots to the platform if they aren’t already on it, which brings a sense of community. The platform is growing more and more and has over 50k downloads on the Google Play store. Make sure to check it out!
Make your own!
Not everyone's first choice, but arguably the best simply because you can literally build anything you want. Even if you have a very little yard space, you can work something out!
You can build a pull up bar using pipes you buy in a hardware store. This is a great video by Derek Simnett on how to build a pullup bar in your backyard. Yes, this may take more effort, but once it’s done, you can literally go in your backyard and workout with no excuses.
You can also build dip bars as well. You can build all of this for easily less than $100, it should last you years and years, and you never have to drive anywhere or try and find a park near you.
Of course, this involves a bit more labor and handyman work, but at the same time, it is quite convenient and nice to just walk into your backyard knowing you have a pullup bar waiting there for you to use.
So You Found or Built a Park...Now What?
You are searching for a park and or spent a bit of money and labor in making one, now what? Do you just rep out pullups and dips or start practicing L-Sits and planches?
